Urine is the most practical specimen for alcohol testing in the workplace, specifically for testing to demonstrate that alcohol consumption has, in fact, occured. Peak urine alcohol levels are reached 40-60 mintutes after alcohol ingestion, and, at this time, are approximately 1.3 times greater than the corresponding blood alcohol concentration. However, this ratio is only valid during the elimination phase, which occurs after the blood alcohol level has peaked and is decreasing. On the plus side, alcohol can be detected in the urine for 1 to 2 hours longer than detected in blood.
